General

What makes United different?
United operates under a social model of care rather than a medical model of care. That means that we see you as a whole person — focusing on your interests, personality and life history, rather than your medical diagnosis. United’s relationship-centered approach means you are empowered to make your own decisions about what is right for you. United has a variety of living options to support you, giving you the freedom to maintain your independence and ensuring you lead a meaningful and fulfilling life with purpose. It’s simple and sincere. And it works.

Our services and amenities are unparalleled when compared to other private seniors’ communities:

• United offers flexible mealtimes and an all-day menu that offers a variety of well-balanced meal options as well as daily features for lunch and dinner

• Our United Minds memory care services are the most progressive in North America

• Our United Cares Wellness and Hospitality teams offer additional care and service options that are completely customizable and can be adjusted as your needs change

• Arts, culture, and educational programs are tailored to resident’s interests fostering a community where everyone can live a full and enriching life

United Active Living is a fully integrated community. This means individuals with diverse needs, including dementia, are an active part of our community, and that couples are not separated even if their care needs differ
What do you mean when you say United is a community?
United Active Living fosters a vibrant, lively environment. You’ll enjoy quality time with other residents while developing authentic, meaningful connections and relationships.

We’re a community within the larger Calgary community too, so you can engage with our community partners, from trips to the Calgary Philharmonic to guest lectures with Mount Royal University subject matter experts. Many residents find their lives expand to include new friends, opportunities to learn, and more socializing when they move into a United community.

While a common expectation is older adults will ‘age in place’, often the family home no longer meets their changing needs. United offers a maintenance-free lifestyle alongside the benefits of aging in a community where there are supports in place to ensure peace of mind, and opportunities to connect, learn, create, and live with purpose.
What does United’s programming look like?
Living a full life in your later years is a key focus in United Active Living communities. Programs are designed around your interests.

The art studios are open 24/7 and facilitated by professional artists. Registered kinesiologists lead a variety of fitness classes for all abilities, and can also design individual programs tailored to your specific wellness goals.

United’s speaker series offers a variety of lectures that range from subject matter experts in history, culture, entertainment, science, music, and technology.

United’s community partnerships offer residents exclusive opportunities to experience arts and culture in Calgary, including Calgary Civic Symphony, Lunchbox Theatre, and the Wilder Institute / Calgary Zoo.

Trial stays give you an immersive experience so you can see for yourself what living in an older community is all about. Contact one of our Active Living Advisors for details and availability.

Health and wellness

Are medical services available?
Health care services are a key offering available to all residents. Your wellness is our number one priority, which means we focus on who you are as a person, not just the state of your health. From our nurses to our hospitality team, we will connect every day to ensure all is well. Learn more about our commitment to wellness.

As your care needs change, we change right with you. For residents living with dementia, United Minds is one of the most progressive dementia care services in North America. Every step of the way, we are dedicated to keeping everyone in our community healthy, safe, and well.

We believe you know how you want to live, so our health care team supports you by providing choice and control when it comes to your wellness. Your health care needs don’t define who you are. Every step of the way, United’s wellness team works with you to learn what you need to live a full, active life and ensure your needs are met.

Our United Cares services are a unique feature of United’s communities. Wellness teams are made up of representatives of all departments — United Minds, nursing, culinary, housekeeping, programming, and fitness. Together, they share knowledge about your concerns, successes, capabilities, and needs, and develop collaborative approaches that can help improve your quality of life.

Because getting to know you as a person is central to our approach to wellness, simply spending time with residents is an important part of our Wellness Team’s job. Nurses at United will always refer to you by your name and wear business casual attire rather than scrubs. Medication support is available to you in your suite to ensure your privacy.
What happens if I experience a health change?
We ensure that your health care needs are well managed, and provide you with the peace of mind that an unexpected change won’t disrupt your connection with your community. Nursing support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Should you need to transition from independent living to assisted living, United Cares services can be added or modified at any time to accommodate your changing needs, ensuring you can continue to enjoy your accustomed lifestyle.
Will I be separated from my spouse if one of us develops health issues?
At United, spouses can choose to live together, even if care needs differ. An essential pillar of United’s philosophy is that we are an integrated community, which includes supporting the close ties that spouses have by helping them remain together if they choose. Many couples also choose to participate in programs and activities that support the general well-being of both.
Will I be able to continue living in my suite should my cognitive abilities change?
Research shows people living with dementia have better outcomes and a higher quality of life when they are included with the general community population. At United, we are an integrated community and do not segregate residents based on the level of care they require. There are no separate dementia wings, locked floors, or secured units. Residents of all abilities are encouraged to participate in programs and events.

At United, we have purposely designed our communities, United Minds services, and specialized employee education to support you in maintaining your independence.

Dementia care

What is your dementia care program all about?
Our job as caregivers is to build relationships with each resident to understand who they are, and how we can provide meaning, purpose, and a sense of belonging. United Active Living’s revolutionary United Minds services ensure individuals experiencing cognitive decline live in the community with purpose, and are supported throughout their journey, while still taking their individual needs and desires into account.

United Active Living is a fully integrated community. There are no locked units that separate residents based on their cognitive or physical abilities. Instead, residents living with dementia live on the same floors as everyone else, eat in the same spaces, and attend the same programs. Importantly, couples stay together even if they have differing needs.
