Nothing about us, without us

December 24, 2024

Patricia Allen was onto something back in 1973 as an emerging champion for older adults.

Just a few years prior, she was the inaugural graduate of the University of Calgary’s Master of Social Work program, and after coordinating a retirement workshop, she quickly came to the realization that while many older adults had a seat at the table, they almost never had a say in the menu.

Seniors were often left to fend for themselves—battling with isolation, a lack of resources and services, stacked on top of rigid governing policies and complicated procedures making access to support difficult for many who needed it most.

From humble beginnings in the basement of the Central United Church, Patricia collaborated with a group of forward-thinking Calgarians to form The Seniors Citizens Central Agency of Calgary: creating day programs and other supports for the senior population in a central location—offering not only the chance for older adults to socialize and connect with each other, but also a place to be seen and heard—giving them the opportunity to advocate for their needs, using their own words.

More than 50 years later, Pat’s legacy lives on through the work of the dedicated team and volunteers at the Unison by Kerby Centre. Located in the heart of downtown Calgary, it has evolved into a central hub where seniors can access resources ranging from health and wellness programs, financial and legal services, to social and recreational activities. To this day, the Unison by Kerby Centre adheres Pat’s motto: nothing about us, without us.

Philosophies aligned

When United Active Living was established, it emerged from a similar set of ideas: that the aging journey could look different than what tradition would suggest. Tenets such as lifelong learning, creative expression, and active aging became core pillars of United’s community lifestyle offering. Today, among its five Calgary communities, several also offer an integrated lifestyle alternative for those living with a cognitive impairment.

In its integrated communities, “residents of all abilities have the opportunity to participate in programming, dine with each other, and otherwise enjoy their day as they see fit,” says Amy McDonough, Executive Director Fish Creek, “Because of this integrated offering, we see residents who are experiencing memory loss or cognitive decline have better outcomes, build meaningful relationships, and feel empowered to continue to pursue their passions.”

When worlds collide

For United Active Living, as a locally owned and operated organization, maintaining connections to its roots and purpose is a priority: the United Active Living Foundation was established in 2015 to give back to the greater community, and help older adults in Calgary thrive.

This year, the United Active Living Foundation has partnered with Unison at Kerby Centre to adopt a classroom, and support their food bank. “Lifelong learning is an important part of the experience within our communities, and we’re thrilled to extend that vision beyond our walls through this partnership,” says Arianne Brady, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at United. “Many residents and employees are eager to get involved directly, and this collaboration offers a meaningful way to roll up our sleeves and create a special space for our older adult learners. The work Unison does is vital for older adults in our city and we’re really looking forward to sharing our love of learning with our broader community.”
