One city, one team: celebrating our growing United family

April 4, 2025

Food, fun, prizes, and a little friendly competition brought team members together from all five United communities for the first-ever One City, One Team event.

The gathering marked a significant milestone following December’s acquisition of three established Calgary communities, which more than doubled the size of United Active Living’s team and positioned the company as one of Calgary’s premier owners and operators of older adult communities.

CEO Kim O’Brien shared gratitude with the team and spoke about the importance of investing in an engaging workplace, noting, “At United, we know there’s a direct connection between highly engaged team members and satisfied residents. That’s why we’re committed to fostering a workplace that’s collaborative, fun, and supportive. Seeing everyone come together reinforced what makes our communities so special—our people.”

The event was designed to strengthen connections across teams, and the energy in the room made it clear that mission was accomplished.

Mingle Bingo had team members on the move, introducing themselves and learning fun facts about colleagues from different communities. Laughter echoed as bingo cards filled up, and new connections began to form.

In the interactive Trivia Showdown, participants put their Calgary knowledge to the test in a fast-paced competition with real-time leaderboard updates. The competition was tight, but Angela Elia, United’s Marketing & Communications Coordinator claimed the top spot, proving she knows this city inside and out.

The excitement continued with Minute to Win It challenges, where teams competed in rapid-fire tasks requiring speed, skill, and a little bit of luck. The final all-community match-up saw Karim Id Bida from Trinity Lodge emerge victorious in the final ring toss, earning not only bragging rights but also an upcoming visit from the mini doughnut food truck for the Trinity Lodge team and residents!

The raffle draw brought even more cheers, with many lucky winners taking home prizes. The biggest winner of the night was Daniela Nastase from Lake Bonavista Village, who walked away with a coveted WestJet voucher.

Vice President Wellness and Employee Engagement and host of for the evening, Kera Redlack, reflected on the event’s success: “We’ve more than doubled our team, and this event was the perfect way to bring everyone together. The energy, camaraderie, and enthusiasm are exactly what makes United such an incredible place to work.”

For many, the evening was a chance to feel part of something bigger. One team member from our newly joined communities shared, “I didn’t know what to expect, but I’ve never felt more welcomed. It’s amazing to be part of a team that truly values connection and fun.”

As we continue growing together, One City, One Team reminded us of the incredible culture we’re building. This is just the beginning—here’s to more opportunities to celebrate, connect, and unite as one team!
