Settle into a comfortable retreat

January 28, 2025

Has a building ever offered you a warm hug?

When stepping through the doors of the Trinity Lodge, you’re immediately greeted by a sense of belonging, a feeling of comfort and familiarity. The scent of Chef Allan’s fresh baked goodies wafts through the air, soft music filters in from the lounge, and the trickle of conversation and laughter beckon you inside to seek out a comfy chair and a warm cup of tea.

Since opening its doors in 1975, Trinity Lodge has provided a warm and supportive space for older adults to call home. Nestled snugly in the southwest community of Kelvin Grove, Trinity Lodge has grown with the community, and notably, so have many of the team members.

Kim Ho, General Manager, started her career at Trinity Lodge in the dining room more than 20 years ago, along with Head Chef Allan who seems to have a bottomless passion for crafting delicious meals and treats in the kitchen. And they’re not the only ones whose tenure at Trinity has spanned more than a decade—many team members have spent their entire careers in the community.

“This is a community that sticks together,” says Kim, “The team is as much a part of the community as the residents. The community may grow and change, but the one constant is the genuine love and respect residents and team members have for each other. People truly feel at home here.” Kim continues, “We see residents thrive here: spending time with each other, making friends, engaging with the team, trying something new, but at their own pace—it creates a community where people do their own thing, but having such warm and inviting spaces draws residents out of their suites to participate in programming, or even just to hang out.”

While Trinity Lodge offers a setting that, on surface level, may appear traditional, a closer uncovers modern elements woven into the fabric of the community. A variety of music is piped in via a digital jukebox, and in the TV Lounge, residents can sit back and kick their feet up in a state-of-the-art massage chair while taking an armchair adventure, courtesy of the Virtual Reality set up. The nearby bistro has a selection of hot and cold beverages ready-made with a touch of a finger—meaning a relaxing afternoon is just a latte away.

“With an abundance of spaces, there’s always somewhere to be, whether it’s in the main lobby where residents gather to catch up on the latest news, or playing games in the activity room, there’s always something going on, someone to chat with. In the summer, residents work together to tend to the three courtyards,” says Trenda Upton, Life Enrichment Assistant, “Residents take pride in their home, and it really shows. They care about us, and they take care of each other. They feel empowered to approach us with feedback and encouragement.” Trenda continues, “I really enjoy spending time with the residents, it’s the highlight of my day when I see them branching out and blossoming.”

“Residents at Trinity love to socialize,” says Melanie Balterocruz, Life Enrichment Manager. “In the morning, we see a lot of residents come out to our fitness classes, and our social programming and daily games bring a lot of people out—they can get really competitive!” She laughs, “But we love to spend time with residents, whether we’re in a scheduled activity, or having a coffee, we get to know each other, and spending quality time together is so, so rewarding.”

Marie K., a resident at Trinity for four years, loves to take part in afternoon programming. Today’s activity: axe throwing. “I like to win,” she laughs, “but I’m really just here to have fun. I like a lot of the games we play—it’s a good way to stay active and socialize with fellow residents. (As far as axe throwing goes, Marie placed third—not too shabby!)

Trinity Lodge isn’t just a special place for team members and residents—friends and loved ones find themselves drawn to the warmth and comfort the community exudes. Patricia B.’s father has been in the community for six months, but it already feels like home. “Every single person at Trinity has made it their mission to provide their personal best and the result is that my dad is happier and healthier than he has been in over a decade.”

Marie C. has been a resident at Trinity for nearly three years, and in that time, she’s found ways to connect: “I’ve met so many lovely people here—we are so well taken care of, the team are like family. I socialize with a lot of people, and I have made a really good friend too. It’s a wonderful place to be.”

Wonderful indeed.
