Ten years, 10,000 memories
Time flies when you’re having fun.
And it’s true: ten years has gone by in a flash. For many, it seems like just yesterday that Fish Creek welcomed its first residents to the brand-new community in south Calgary.
Fast forward to January 2026, when residents and team members gathered for the annual Resident Appreciation Party to celebrate together — many of whom have been part of the community since its earliest days.
The party was not only a lively afternoon of dancing and merriment, but also a meaningful opportunity to share memories of the community’s early days, when its doors first opened in 2016.
“I knew the second I walked through the doors, that this was the place for me,” says Al, who has been a Fish Creek resident for more than nine years. “Even in the beginning I could see that the community was different from the others I toured. I didn’t hesitate to sign up. I loved the art studio, and even today, I stop by with my granddaughters to spend time with them.”
Libby, who moved in shortly after shared, “The big bright windows and busy spaces made me feel like I was on a cruise ship! The lobby and bistro were filled with people mingling, chatting, and having a good time. I didn’t want to be in a traditional setting. The modern spaces and interesting programming really suited me and my lifestyle.”
Finding new firsts
As the first residents trickled into the brand-new community a decade ago, it was clear they were going to be an important part of creating the culture at Fish Creek– taking an active part in shaping the programming, welcoming new residents, and connecting with the team.
One of the original team members, Carolyn Smith, started her career with United at the Concierge desk, and over the years has transitioned to the role of Active Living Advisor. Carolyn plays a significant role in welcoming and supporting residents as they join the community. “I absolutely love seeing new residents connect and make new friends,” Carolyn says. “Often, making the decision to move comes with a lot of trepidation, but as they settle in, they really find their stride, and quickly become a part of the community. They love to bring their loved ones in to share the experience, and to meet their new friends. It’s truly heartwarming to see our residents thrive.”
Fish Creek’s Art Studio has evolved to become one of the community’s primary social hubs – offering a space for residents to gather, to attend creative workshops, and to embark on their own personal creative journeys. Chantel Traub, Creative Facilitator, has watched as residents have transformed the art studio into a bustling and vibrant space, “At first, residents can feel intimidated by the thought of starting a creative practice, or even attending a workshop – in the beginning, we really had to push residents to participate! But now, we have residents in here every single day, starting projects of their own, without our prompting.” Chantel continues, “I see residents developing relationships, encouraging each other, and taking initiative. The art studio is more than just a place to have fun. I see residents gaining confidence in themselves each day, and it’s so rewarding.”
Continuing the story
As the Fish Creek community continues to grow and evolve, welcoming new residents and perspectives, it seems one thing remains constant: the people make the place. Each day, we see the joy of companionship, the power of connection, and the love that comes from a community that has been built together.
From the team and the residents, celebrating ten years has been so much more than just marking off days in a (resident-created) calendar. It’s become a place to call home.
What are you waiting for?
